Have you played fantasy football for years and, while you still enjoy the challenge, do you feel that the championship is awarded every year to the coach who had a luckiest break or two? Do you feel little ownership of your team because your roster changes every year? Are you ready to stop playing in the sandbox and get onto the gridiron? Are you ready to truly showcase your skills as a serious fantasy coach?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, a dynasty league may be for you.
Building Your Dynasty
A dynasty league gives you the ability to do just that - build your dynasty. Redraft or keeper leagues have most or all players return to the player draft pool at the end of the year. A dynasty league is created with an initial draft followed by annual rookie/free-agent drafts. There are no "do-over's", lucky breaks or casual coaching when participating in a dynasty league. A dynasty league rewards the serious coach who does their research, carefully plans their trades and balances current needs vs. future rewards. Choke the initial draft and you're rebuilding for years to come. Nail the initial draft and become the envy, and the target, of every other coach in the league.
Some keeper leagues will allow you to keep a player or two or three from year to year, but is that really anything more than a modified redraft league? In redraft or keeper leagues, every year has a nice soft safety net - the end of the year. Here you can wash away your coaching mistakes, your lack of interest, your sub-par draft or major injuries and start all over again. After all, they aren't YOUR players. Serious fantasy football coaches want nothing to do with perennial cellar-dwelling teams. You want in your face, booger nose, smack talkin' coaches who eat, sleep and crap fantasy football. You may not have Bill Cowher's chin, but damn it, you have his intensity!
Building Your Team
Imagine a team made up of 25+ roster spots, filled with players from your initial draft. They are all yours until you decide otherwise. Will you allow players to retire off of your roster? Will you fill your roster with young players in hopes of assembling a true dynasty in the years to come? Will you go the route of filling your team with established veterans that have nothing left to prove? Will you parlay your way to a dynasty through aggressive trading? Maybe a combination of all these strategies? The choice is yours.
Each year a rookie and free agent draft are held just as in the NFL. In order to draft a rookie or free agent, you must accommodate him by releasing a player currently on your roster, or in some other way make sure you are at or below your league's roster limit. Choose wisely. Next year, you do it again. Will you be the coach that made a hasty drop, only to see him picked up that same day by a divisional foe?
